Pizza and Jazz: Sac’s Place

Sac’s Place lures you in with ruddy brick walls and tall, empty bottles of wine. Hand-painted grapevines and heavy lanterns line the east side of the exterior, which faces a shady, overgrown street. Expect immediate warmth. I walked in to broad smiles and boastful hellos before taking a seat in the patio area, which is enclosed by large, bay windows.

Pastas range from $11.95 to $15.95, while almost all the pork and veal is above $20.00. But go to Sac’s for the pizza – thin, but not droopy, crisp, but not scalding or burnt. When I asked for some red pepper, the waiter handed it to me fresh in a dish with a tiny spoon. Split a 14-inch, medium cheese pie with a few friends for $15.50. If you’re still hungry for dessert, and your wallet can take it, order the ricotta cheesecake to finish – sweet, with a thick, flaky crust.

Sac’s has preserved its original hole-in-the-wall feel from when it opened in 1989 as a small, corner pizzeria on Broadway. Owners Anthony and Domenico Sacramone are famous for growing all the oregano, rosemary, basil and anise themselves at Anthony’s home in Pennsylvania. The brothers have since made a few changes. When I asked the waiter about the history of the place, he pointed to photographs of Anthony and Domenico themselves and told me about the renovations made in 1999 to the interior, and the addition of the airy sidewalk patio. Come on Monday nights to listen to the Larry Luger Trio. Luger entered the music scene early, taking up small gigs in the Bronx while still in high school, and since landing regular shows in Manhattan and Queens. He and his band play weekly at Sac’s from 7:30 to 10:30, filling the room with jazz that’s (almost) as good as the smell of the baking pies. Walk in, order a slice, and join the family.

Candy Plum in Astoria

Candy Plum in Astoria has a unique collection of local designer ware. Clothes, bags, jewelry and other accessories make up Cynthia Puhalovic’s three year old shop on 30-98 36th Street. This eclectic collection is part of the growing fashion center in Astoria, Queens.

The tiny little space is crammed full of items, with bags decorating the very top shelves and a small dressing room in the back corner. All of the pieces come from local designers. The Queensbound line offers I Heart Queens tees ($35) and other Queens-inspired clothing. There are dresses, shirts and even bathing suits for the summer.

Puhalovic has a variety of jewelry for every taste. There are even hollowed out bullet earrings, which are without a doubt the most innovative item in the shop.
If clothes and accessories aren’t what you are looking for, then check out Blue Q toiletries and Qassa candles. Barack Obama and Madonna are some of the celebs you can find on these votive candles.
On the website, their very un-Manhattan boutique prices are the selling point. “Along with its affordability, Candy Plum is known to carry a multitude of different styles, whether it be in the vintage, handmade, or brand-new pieces.” Some items are definitely affordable, especially compared to their Manhattan counterparts, but others are just a tad overpriced. Among the 25 designers, there aren’t many items below $20. Knee high dresses, in various styles, run for about $85 to $90; yet lace headbands can be $25.

Check out Candy Plum on Facebook to find out when the store will be hosting trunk sales, items are up to 30% off and designers bring in new merchandise. Puhalovic hosts them throughout the year.
Candy Plum has also been featured in NY Magazine, TIME OUT NY, Queens Chronicle and The New York Times.
