Just Like Mother’s

justlikemothers

I was craving a big breakfast but I didn’t want to head to a diner. Instead we went to Just Like Mother’s in Forest Hills and had a satisfying Polish breakfast. They have typical eggs and omelettes that you can get with kielbasa–definitely get it fried! Although we didn’t order them, I hear the blintzes there are good too. It was a nice change of pace for a Saturday morning, plus it’s really close to La Boulangerie, so pick up a baguette on the way home if there are any left!

Vaya Bags – Ridgewood, Queens

vayabagskyline

We recently met up with the Vaya Bags team at their Ridgewood, Queens storefront/workshop to get a peak at what goes into making these very cool (and practical) messenger bags. Signature bags are made mostly of recycled sailboat canvas. I had no idea sailboat canvas came in such bright colors!

Vaya Bags owner, Tia, is no stranger to using recycled materials to create something new. Her father was a leather crafstman and used to make things out of leftover scraps of leather. Tia uses recycled bike tubes donated by a few bike shops in Brooklyn to add flair to some of the bags. She also has purses and other accessories that are made completely out of the recycled bike tubes.

Vaya bags are perfect for riding and are completely waterproof. We want the laptop bag found here: http://www.vayabags.com/recycled-bike-tube-gear.php

Tia’s favorite place to ride her bike? Forest Park and Ridgewood Resevoir (on the Brooklyn-Queens border).

Corner Bistro Coming to Long Island City

corner_bistroLIC

Driving around looking for a spot in Long Island City (if you live there, you know how long we were looking), I noticed a new development. Grub Street reported back in July (through LiQcity and Why Leave Astoria) that Corner Bistro would be opening up a second location in Long Island City in 3-4 months. Picture above shows that the time is almost upon us! The (likely) well-known ‘Corner Bistro’ neon sign is there, but is not lit up yet. Very excited to have them in the neighborhood. We will continue to patiently await the grand opening!

Little Oven

On the hunt to find some gluten free goodies, we walked into Little Oven on Jackson Avenue in Long Island City. Their cute little storefront is full of macarons (gluten free). We tried the very sweet caramel fleur de sel and dark chocolate macarons. We also found out that they will make pre-ordered gluten free pies and a delicious flourless chocolate cake. Can’t wait to try it out for a special occasion!
